Indigo Joe

Why anything?
trying to find a reason
to bring
a song to my lips.

Why anything when everything
slips away
and we’re framed in the doorway
of tomorrow where yesterday is
only a memory we think we had.

Why anything if everywhere is
the nowhere of no-mans land
and the fatigue’ is the remnant
of a uniform we used to wear.

There’s a  cactus on the sill
I will water it one day
it lives on in spite of
or because of my humours.

When Indigo Joe’s got
to go and his sun sets
between the pine trees
I get to my knees
and pray a while
