One more day to kick our heels

someone somewhere’s doing deals
putting seals on envelopes
selling off the family jewels
taking us for fools.

I haven’t even woke up yet
although I’ve been awake for years.

The future is receding
according to the news
I’m reading
but in other news it’s bright

what do we believe?

In this place where
‘there be dragons’
time drags on
the ship sails on
the crew’s all gone
the skipper’s on one
there’s a fire in the rigging
and someone’s still digging
for gold.

The sun rises slowly over
the masthead
he watches the wandering
albatross.
